SMVAF News - Fully fledged orthopaedic clinic for new head quarters

6 November, 2015 - In order to reduce the incidental expenses that are incurred when referring claimants for cross border procedures, the SMVA Fund's nearly completed headquarters will consist of an orthopaedic clinic. The organisation's CEO said that the main motivation behind this move was the realisation of the scarcity of such institution's locally which escalated the costs for patient referrals, hence the ideology to localise this infrastructure.

"The orthopaedic clinic will consist of technology comprising of radiology equipment, CAT scans, MRI scans, EEG equipment to monitor brain activity, cancer detection machinery as well as a physiotherapy division that will be used for recuperating our claimants hopefully so that they are able to return to their previous state before the occurrence of the accident," he stated.

Vilakati added that with such machinery at the clinics disposal, the imaging trips (CT scans, etc.) undertaken to South African hospitals would be stamped out and the claimants would only be referred for actual procedures.

"We utilise company vehicles and drivers to take our claimants for procedures in South Africa where we normally also have to cater for accommodation and meals in addition to the doctor's fees which we have to pay. Because we are now more focused on the rehabilitation of our claimants, it is only viable that we provide such infrastructure which will minimise expenses in the long run with the assistance of a local qualified surgeon who will be responsible for these procedures," he added.
