SMVAF News - MVA Fund offering scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery

6 November, 2015 - Due to the shortage of qualified specialists in the field of medicine locally, the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) is offering a scholarship in orthopaedic surgery to one deserving candidate, with the intention to contribute to the skills development of local medical practitioners. The scholarship is open to all qualified Swazi national doctors that possess an MB.ChB degree, who have successfully completed their internship and are practising either privately or publicly in a medical facility within the country.

According to SMVAF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Helmon Vilakati, the health sector, and particularly the profession of doctors, is a critical area that needs educational support because of the high tuition fees involved, hence the reason the MVA Fund decided to sponsor two interested applicant, particularly in the field of orthopaedic surgery. He said that as an organisation that dealt with the treatment and rehabilitation of road accident victims, the Fund resolved to play its part in capacitating general practitioners who were eager to specialise as orthopaedic surgeons, but were hampered by the high costs involved.

"The objectives behind the scholarship is to give back as a socially responsible corporate citizen within the society in which we operate to positively contribute to the skills development in the health sector, and we are also cognisant of our corporate strategy which is informed by the general mandate which focuses on the treatment and rehabilitation of our claimants," he said. The CEO stated that the scholarship covered tuition, books, stationery and a personal allowance, whilst emphasizing that the recipient must be willing to demonstrate a strong willingness to pursue and finish the course as it would be demanding and needed a sacrifice.

"Once the awardee has completed their training, we expect the surgeon to be employed locally so as to work in close collaboration with the Fund as some of our rehabilitation operations will be internalised with the construction of the Fund's new headquarters which will be completed early in 2016," he highlighted. Vilakati stressed that full details including terms and conditions of the scholarship would be discussed at interview level with the successful candidate, accordingly advising medical practitioners to utilise this opportunity to further develop themselves. "We are currently running adverts in the local daily newspapers announcing the scholarship framework and the terms and conditions for selection, and all applications should be sent to the office of the Human Resources Manager not later that 27th November 2015 as specified in the advert," he said.
